Student Sample

Here is a sample story. Notice how this young writer has created multiple points where the narrative could shift slightly. Also notice how the endings of the story converge upon itself, whichever direction the reader chose earlier. This convergence of the story is a good way to keep the project from moving too far astray and becoming unwieldy. The use of a graphic organizer -- even a simple block diagram of the story or a concept map -- is a recommended tool for writers to keep track of the story as they are writing and planning the various branches.

His heart was pounding. He was sure he had seen the doorknob turn…CRASH!!! Something fell behind him. He heard plates breaking. He closed his eyes and slowly turned around...

Should he open his eyes?

An uninvited guest, he thought. He shivered as he opened his eyes. Instead of seeing someone in particular, he saw a shadow on the wall where the plates had broken. A chill went up his spine. "Who are you?" He whispered, "What do you want from me?" The shadow disappeared. A ghost, he thought. The chandelier started to swing. Creak, creak, it went. He ran upstairs, his footsteps pounding on the stairs. He rushed into his room and slammed the door shut. He peeked outside his door. Someone, or something, had turned on the light in the room across from him.

Should he find out what's happening?

I have to find out what's happening, he decided. He crept out of his room. He heard a strange noise coming from that room. It was sort of a squealing sound. He approached the door. He made a brave move to open the door. That's when he decided to look behind him. He turned around and sees the most horrifying sight ever. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
